Is Pollution a necessary Evil

Contrary to what others may believe, in my opinion to achieve the lifestyle we are living right now, not just one person but the human race as a whole, pollution is a necessary evil. The comfortable life we have right now, relies on electricity and energy. And in order to achieve energy quickly and efficiently, natural resources that produce pollution are used.

Our very existence relies on transportation, which includes cars and other vehicles. Without the fast transportation we have today people would have to wake up earlier to get to work on time, and that is not something they want to do. I know everyone wants us to use the bus and subways systems more often, but their main customer is students and low-wage workers. You don't often see someone with a six figure salary riding the bus.

Another way pollution is necessary, is for the growth of developing countries. when a country is trying to take the next the step in becoming a first-world country, the use of fossil fuels and other natural resources is necessary. The whole growth of China is based on cheap manufacturing and without the use of fossil fuels that is not possible. No large corporation is going to sacrifice their dirt cheap wholesale price, just to try to save China's environment. The consequence of that, is now the city of Beijing is dangerous to even breath in. Although some of the pollution is because of smokers, most of it come from manufacturing plants and factories.

The food we eat isn't pollution free either. When farmers are trying to produce crops, they apply many dangerous chemicals and pesticides to increase the growth of crops. These pesticides and insecticides damage the environment and can pollute the water systems. But we need food, so these sacrifices are made despite the consequences.

Many food items that we once thought of as pure, are now mass-produced and are full of sugar and other unnecessary ingredients that are harmful to the body.  An example of that is wheat. Wheat is the building block for many favourite foods such as: bread and pasta. But now wheat is not what it used to be, because of high demand and low supply.

People want things cheap and convenient so they don't have to get off their couch. People know the benefit of electric cars and using public transportation, but would rather buy a regular car, because of the price and the simplicity, and partly because their ego can't take the hit. No rich person is going to buy a hybrid just to save the environment. They're going to want a Mercedes or Audi, so they don't have to boast about their wealth, it's self explanatory.

In conclusion, I think that pollution is a necessary evil, especially if you want to achieve human
convenience.  Industries can cause a lot of pollution in our country and others, but it is all to achieve human convenience. If there was only one reason pollution was necessary, I'd say it is because of human development.
